An intuitive Chrome extension for effortless media selection and swifter deliberation on what to watch and where.

THE DILEMMA

With the newfound convenience and abundance of choice on streaming platforms such as Netflix and Hulu, our team recognized that many of our peers face a peripheral dilemma on the daily: deciding what exactly they want to watch on a particular day.

While people subscribe to streaming services to have a consistent supply of movies and TV shows at hand, the sheer size of these libraries tend to overwhelm and burden users instead. Precious time is wasted in efforts to decide on what to watch, and the painstaking process sometimes deters people from settling down altogether.

OUR GOALS

- Facilitate the streaming experience by building a service that helps users choose a movie or show based on their preferences.
- Design a Chrome extension that is straightforward, intuitive, and whimsical.

INTENDED AUDIENCE

We created Filmsicle with the intent of assisting those who, like ourselves, often find themselves struggling to determine which movie or TV show they're interested in watching at any given moment. We conducted interviews with a few of our peers, who all expressed an interest in an app or extension that would make this selection easier and more convenient:

"I'm not the most decisive person, and it's quite irritating when I settle down to watch Netflix but end up spending more time scrolling through their library aimlessly than I do actually watching something."

"Watching movies should be a way to unwind, but the whole process leading up to choosing one to watch can be tiresome. Sometimes I just want someone else to give me a suggestion, and I'll run with it."

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE

Brief overview of the content organization and user flow of the app.

LOW-FIDELITY WIREFRAMING

Simplified layouts of the final product to ease the design process.

USER-FRIENDLY INTERFACES

We wanted to build a Chrome extension that wouldn't overwhelm users with its complexity and convolution, striving for convenience and simplicity instead.

TAKEAWAYS

How do you ensure efficiency at a smaller scale?
Working with limited screens at a limited size was an initial challenge we had to overcome. We wanted to ensure that users would get the most out of an undemanding and intuitive application, so I learned to compact functions without cluttering the page.
Consistency in theme and vibe.
Establishing a theme for our extension early on gave us a foundation from which we worked to write our text and determine our visual elements. By naming our project "Filmsicle", we adopted a playful food theme that informed many of our decisions throughout the application.
